A , AN เรียกว่า Indefinite Article ใช้นำหน้าคำนามนับได้เอกพจน์ในการกล่าวถึงบุคคลหรือสิ่งของขึ้นมาลอยๆ ไม่ชี้จำเพาะเจาะจงไปว่าเป็นคนไหนหรือสิ่งไหน
วิธีใช้นะคะ จะมีอยู่ 7 วิธีก็คือ
1. A ใช้นำหน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ (consonant sound) เช่น
a student a dog a lawyer a brother a professor a fresh egg
2. A ใช้นำหน้าคำที่ออกเสียงเหมือนกับขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ แม้ว่าคำนั้นๆ จะขึ้นต้นด้วยสระก็ตาม ออกเสียงเหมือนกับพยัญชนะ Y เช่น
a European a Union a used car a uniform a university
3. AN ใช้คำหน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ (vowel sound) เช่น
an uncle an old house an ugly man an elephant
4. AN ใช้นำหน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ H แต่เวลาอ่านไม่ออกเสียง H (silent h) แต่ออกเสียงสระตัวตัวต่อไปแทน เช่น
an hour an honour an hair an honest girl
5. A, AN ใช้เมื่อเราจะกล่าวถึงความเร็ว ราคา จำนวน และสัดส่วน เช่น
The car was going forty kilometres an hour.
Eggs cost fifteen bath a dozen.
She bought the material for $ 2 a matre.
The temperature is taken twice a day.
6. A, AN นิยมใช้กับสำนวน (idiomatic phrases) เช่น
to have a headache to have a cold to have a pain to have a fever
7. A ใช้นำหน้า Mr./Miss./Mrs. + Surname เพื่อแสดงว่าผู้พูดไม่รู้จักคนๆ นั้นเนื่องจากคนนั้นเป็นคนแปลกหน้าในสายตาของผู้พูด หรือผู้พูดไม่เคยพบเจอมาก่อน แต่ถ้าไม่มี A นำหน้าแสดงว่าผู้พูดรู้จักมักคุ้นกับเขาคนนั้นดีแล้ว เช่น
A Mr. John will come to see you tomorrow.
A Mrs. Allen has called to see you.
แต่เราก็ยังนำมาใช้ในกรณีพิเศษได้อีกด้วยนะคะ ตามนี้เลยค่ะ
1. A ใช้หลังคำว่า such , what
2. A ใช้หลังคำว่า not a , many a, quite a, rather a
3. A ใช้หน้าคำว่า a few, a lot of, a little
4. A ใช้หลัง so/too + Adj. + Singular noun
5. ใช้ในคำว่า Half an hour / a half hour
6. A ใช้ในสำนวน idioms ได้ โดยวางไว้หลังกริยา make หลังกริยา take และหลังกริยาอื่นๆ เช่น
